Rockbridge Rocks: Spreading Love with Painted Rocks

“Rockbridge Rocks” is a Facebook page with over six thousand followers, many who paint rocks and combine that with easter bunny mojo to spread positive vibes and connect with others. We interviewed Joanna Higginbotham on how she got started with the group and her experience in the pro-bono rock painting and giving away business. Spoiler alert…. having a hobby that brings joy to others is a win win!

As an example this is the first message Joanna received when she started painting and hiding rocks: “My daughter found the yellow chicken “being unique is better…” one over the weekend and CHERISHES it. In fact she’s sleeping with it and begged me to let her bring it to school to share with her friends. You brought a young girl a very positive message and a lot of happiness – THANK YOU!”

Q&A with Joanna Higginbotham, rock painter and moderator of “Rockbridge Rocks” Facebook page:

Rock River: How did Rockbridge Rocks get started?

Joanna: Jennifer Hopkins started Rockbridge Rocks because her son found a pumpkin rock at his school and he was so excited about it so she reached out to the group who hid that particular rock and they told her how to get started with her own group. And the rest, I suppose, is history. LOL.

Rock River: What year was this?

Joanna: 2017

Rock River: How and when did you get started with Rockbridge Rocks?

Joanna: Not exactly sure but I started painting rocks about 6 or 7 years ago. I noticed on Facebook Jennifer had started Rockbridge Rocks Facebook page and saw where people were posting rocks and talking about hiding them. I checked into it a bit more and also read up on kindness rocks and it just seemed like such a nice thing to do in our community. Honestly, I had no clue I would even enjoy painting rocks, but it has been very therapeutic and I just love it.

Rock River: Who else is involved?

Joanna: Anyone can join us and paint rocks and post when they hide them. Many, many people have contributed in that way, and we welcome anyone to join us. But as far as the Facebook page along with Jennifer Hopkins and myself, Brandy Hostetter also paints rocks and helps and is an administrator with the Rockbridge Rocks” Facebook page.

Rock River: Where do ya’ll hide your rocks?

Joanna: Most of my rocks get hidden in Glasgow, Natural Bridge, Buena Vista, Lexington, and Fairfield. Once in a while, if I head towards Staunton or Waynesboro, I hide a few in those areas too.

Rock River: What is one of your favorite stories about how your rocks affected people positively?

There are so many… I actually saved the exact words a lady used as it was the first feedback I received years ago. That one is very special to me; I can find that and send to you, but probably my favorite story is when a family found one of my Halloween rocks at the Natural Bridge Zoo and contacted me to let me know. They said they were taking it back home to Baltimore for their grandchildren to hide there. I mentioned how it’s always neat to see my creations travel and that I was excited about it going to Baltimore, because my daddy was such a huge Baltimore Orioles fan before he passed away. I didn’t expect to ever hear from them again, but then I received some photos and a message saying they weren’t able to hide my rock inside the stadium, but they got as close as they could, the Babe Ruth statue right outside of Oriole Park at Camden Yards!! Oh my goodness!! These kind-hearted people… people I don’t even know… did that for me even when they didn’t have to! I cannot express how much that means to me!! I have been told that some of my rocks have touched the lives of others and that truly makes me happy. But in this case, I am the one who was touched in the most wonderful way!! I will never forget this.

Rock River: How many rocks have you painted and hidden?
Joanna: Not sure, but I know I have hidden hundreds since I started painting.
Rock River: What products do you use to paint rocks?
Joanna: I use acrylic paint. Usually the little Apple Barrel bottles from Walmart. I prefer matte over glossy. I get Mod Podge to seal them with and also paint brushes from Walmart.
Rock River: How do you get your inspiration for what you paint on rocks?
Joanna: I get my inspiration from pretty much everywhere. I know I am not a professional, but if I see something I like I try to play around with it and put my own spin on it. And I enjoy doing holiday rocks, especially Halloween and Christmas.
Rock River: What would you recommend to someone wanting to take this idea home to their local area after a vacation?
Joanna: I just recommend that they have fun with it. You don’t have to spend a fortune to paint a few rocks. And if you don’t want to paint actual characters or things like that, words can be encouraging too. A lot of my rocks have positive words or sayings. And if they choose to start a group or join a group of rock painters in their area, they should put the name of the group on the back of their rocks so that the person who finds them can post it if they want to and let people know they found it. A lot of the time people do not post the rocks they find. I like when they do, but if they don’t it’s okay, too. I feel like if one of my rocks makes a positive difference in someone else’s day, that’s all that matters. And I think it’s fine if somebody decides to keep one. Or they can rehide it. It’s totally up to them.

Rock River: Where do you source your rocks?
Joanna: I get my rocks from various places in Rockbridge County. Sometimes the shape of the rock determines what I paint. Flatter rocks are my favorites, but I will play around with pretty much any shape.
Rock River:
Thank you for taking the time to share your hobby and for choosing a hobby that brings joy to others.
Joanna:
Thank you for showing such an interest! Rockbridge rocks has made such a huge and positive difference in my life and hopefully it has made a difference, and will continue to make a difference, in the lives of others, as well.

Wild Berry Bonanza: A Guide to Berry Seasons from May to August in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley

This guide is based on foraging southern Shenandoah Valley, around Lexington and Natural Bridge, Virginia down through Roanoke, VA. Berry enthusiasts can enjoy a diverse array of wild and cultivated berries throughout the late spring and summer months in Shenandoah Valley. Here’s a guide to the berry seasons in this region:

Spring Berries

Mulberries: These are typically the earliest berries to ripen, usually available from late May through early July. Red mulberry trees (Morus rubra) can often be found along backroads and in understory areas, especially near streams and old fencerows. Serviceberries (Juneberries): As their alternate name suggests, these berries typically ripen in June. They offer a sweet flavor with a hint of almond and are excellent for fresh eating or in pies and jams.

Early Summer Berries

Strawberries: While the peak season for strawberries in central Virginia is typically May, in the slightly cooler Shenandoah Valley region, you might find them available into early June. Raspberries: Black raspberries (Rubus occidentalis) usually ripen next, featuring purplish-black drupes that are sweeter than their blackberry relatives. Red raspberries may have a limited early harvest around mid-June, with a more substantial fall crop.

Mid-Summer Berries

Wineberries (Rubus phoenicolasius): These invasive but tasty berries typically ripen from late June to August. In the Shenandoah Valley, expect them to be ready for picking in early to mid-July. Blackberries (Rubus allegheniensis): The blackberry season usually runs from mid-July through August in this region. Dewberries (Rubus flagellaris): These close relatives of blackberries ripen around the same time. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra): This superfruit is widely enjoyed by wildlife and humans alike. Elderberries are not only delicious when cooked into jams, pies, and wines, but they also have impressive medicinal properties. The berries and flowers are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and immune-boosting compounds, making them a valuable wild edible. In the Shenandoah Valley, elderberry season typically runs from mid-July through August. Ground-cherries (Physalis virginiana): These small, yellow-orange berries enclosed in papery husks have a sweet-tart flavor often compared to pineapple. They typically ripen in mid to late summer.

Late Summer Berries

Blueberries: While not as common in the wild in this area, highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum) are the last of the summer berries to ripen, typically available from late July into August. For foragers and berry enthusiasts in the Lexington and Natural Bridge area, this progression of berries offers opportunities from late spring through late summer. The specific timing can vary based on local microclimates, elevation, and yearly weather patterns. When foraging, always ensure proper identification of plants and be aware of local regulations regarding wild harvesting. For those who prefer cultivated berries, local farms and farmers’ markets in the area often offer pick-your-own options or fresh-picked berries throughout the season. Remember that berry seasons can overlap, especially in years with unusual weather patterns. In some fortunate years, you might even find multiple berry species available simultaneously, allowing for delightful mixed berry harvests.

Where to Look for Berries

Look for berry bushes and trees in the following locations:

  • Field edges and borders of woodlots
  • Roadsides and old fencerows
  • Streamsides and wetland areas
  • Recently disturbed areas like clear cuts or burns

Some species like mulberries prefer the understory, while others thrive in full sun. Wineberries, blackberries and dewberries are often found together in mixed thickets.

Identifying Berries

When foraging for wild berries, it’s absolutely critical to properly identify each species before consuming, as some can be poisonous. While many red, black, and purple berries may appear tempting, it’s important to exercise extreme caution – up to half of red berries can be poisonous, and even 25% of black and purple berries may be unsafe. The only way to ensure your safety is to have any foraged berries positively identified by an expert botanist or experienced forager before eating. Never consume a berry unless you are 100% certain of its identification and edibility. When in doubt, leave it out. That said, here are some key identifying features to look for when attempting to recognize common wild berries in the Shenandoah Valley region:

Mulberries (Morus rubra):

  • Heart-shaped leaves with rough texture and rounded teeth on edges
  • Leaves are 3-5 inches long and 2-4 inches wide
  • Berries start out white, turn pink, then ripen to a dark purple-black color
  • Berries are 1-1.5 inches long, elongated and cylindrical in shape
  • Grow in clusters on the branches

Serviceberries (Amelanchier arborea):

  • Shrubs or small trees growing 15-25 feet tall
  • Leaves are oval to elliptical, 1-3 inches long, finely toothed
  • Produce clusters of small white flowers in early spring before leaves emerge
  • Berries start out red, ripening to a dark purple-black color
  • Berries are small, only 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter

Raspberries (Rubus occidentalis):

  • Canes are covered in small thorns or prickles
  • Leaves are compound with 3-5 leaflets, green above and silvery-white below
  • Flowers have 5 white petals
  • Berries are red, black, purple or yellow depending on variety
  • Berries are composed of many drupelets surrounding a hollow core

Wineberries (Rubus phoenicolasius):

  • Canes are covered in small reddish glandular hairs and small thorns
  • Leaves have 3 leaflets, green above and silvery-white below
  • Flowers have 5 white petals
  • Berries are bright red in color
  • Berries are composed of many drupelets surrounding a solid core

Blackberries (Rubus allegheniensis):

  • Canes are covered in larger hooked thorns than wineberries
  • Leaves have 3-5 leaflets, green on both sides
  • Flowers have 5 white petals
  • Berries are black when ripe
  • Berries are composed of many drupelets surrounding a solid core

Blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum):

  • Shrubs growing 6-12 feet tall
  • Leaves are elliptical, 1-2 inches long, blue-green in color
  • Flowers are small, white to pinkish, bell-shaped
  • Berries are dark blue with a whitish bloom
  • Berries are 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter

Elderberries (Sambucus canadensis):

  • Shrubs growing 5-12 feet tall
  • Leaves are compound with 5-11 leaflets, each 2-6 inches long
  • Flat-topped clusters of small white flowers in early summer
  • Berries start out green, turn red, then purple-black when ripe
  • Berries are small, only 1/4 inch in diameter but grow in large clusters

Ground-cherries (Physalis virginiana):

  • Annual plants growing 1-3 feet tall
  • Leaves are 2-4 inches long, oval to heart-shaped
  • Flowers are small, yellow, bell-shaped
  • Berries are enclosed in a papery husk that splits open when ripe
  • Berries are 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter, yellow to purple when ripe

Enjoying Your Harvest

Once you’ve positively identified the berries and confirmed their edibility with an expert, you can safely enjoy them fresh or use them in jams, pies, cobblers, and other desserts. Many wild berries can be consumed raw or cooked, allowing you to experience different flavor profiles. Elderberries, however, are best cooked before eating. While the berries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and immune-boosting properties, they contain trace amounts of cyanide-inducing compounds that are deactivated through cooking. Remember to only pick from areas free of pesticides or other contaminants. Just select the ripest, sweetest berries and allow others – both humans and wildlife – to also benefit from the berry bounty and its antioxidant power boost. And always get permission before foraging on private property. With a little knowledge and care, you can safely and sustainably enjoy the delicious wild berries of the Shenandoah Valley. Much like eating local honey can help support your immune system, consuming antioxidant-dense local berries provide health benefits. Happy Foraging.

Discovering America’s Largest Antique Store on a Rainy Vacation Day

We were enjoying our second stay with Rock River Experiences and had planned a day around some of their outdoor recommendations. As raindrops pattered against the windows of our cozy vacation rental, these plans took a backseat. Little did we know that this rainy day would lead us on an unexpected adventure to what is recognized as “America’s Largest Antique Store”—the Verona Factory Antique Mall, just a short drive away.

A Rainy Day Adventure Begins

Our arrival started with a sense of anticipation, eager to explore the vast and unique treasures within. We ventured in, curiosity guiding our way as we navigated the extensive collection of vintage wonders within the Verona Antique Mall. From antique furniture exuding character to vintage clothing that transported us to another time, the “store” became more of a “museum,” with something for every history enthusiast.

Vintage Wonders Around Every Corner

The Verona Factory Antique Mall opened in 1996 and was recognized as America’s largest antique store with 121,000 square feet. Since then they have expanded to over 147,000 square feet!  The aisles resembled charming streets from bygone eras, and it quickly became evident this was indeed America’s largest antique store. Classic toys, retro electronics, games, sterling silver jewelry, and more awaited discovery in this eclectic emporium. It was as if each corner held a new surprise, and we could spend hours uncovering hidden experiences from the past.

An Eclectic Collection

What impressed us the most was the sheer variety of items on display. From timeless trinkets to unique collectibles and neon lights, there was truly something for everyone. We marveled at the beautifully crafted custom signs and imagined the stories behind each piece.

Community Engagement and Sustainability

As we continued to explore, it became evident that the Verona Antique Mall was not merely a shopping destination; it was deeply rooted in the local community. The mall has become a cornerstone of Verona’s economy since its opening as, along with its over 250 vendors, it also  actively supports local schools, historical societies, and cultural events, making it a hub of community engagement. The mall’s commitment to sustainability is particularly noteworthy, aligning perfectly with the growing trend of eco-conscious living. By promoting the reuse and repurposing of vintage items, the Factory Antique Mall plays a crucial role in reducing waste and preserving history. Its vast collection, from 1800s solid walnut buffets to collectible gifts, not only caters to antique enthusiasts but also educates visitors about the value of heritage preservation. Furthermore, the mall’s involvement in period film and TV productions, such as “Lincoln” and “Turn,” showcases its significance in cultural preservation beyond its walls. This multifaceted approach to business, community support, and environmental consciousness has earned the Factory Antique Mall numerous awards and consistent recognition from the likes of Virginia Living magazine.

Hungry for More

After a couple of hours exploring and being captivated by history’s embrace, our appetite for adventure was still vibrant; however, a craving for more than just vintage treasures began to stir. It was then that we decided to check out Tasty Bites, the charming café that calls this antique store home. This delightful spot boasts a menu filled with homemade daily specials and comforting meals, making it the ideal place to recharge.

Delights at Tasty Bites

We were pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu, offering an array of homemade desserts, soups, sandwiches, salads, and wraps. Our mid-adventure meal choice was a mouthwatering grilled chicken avocado wrap. It turned out to be an excellent selection—a flavorful combination of tender grilled chicken, creamy avocado, fresh vegetables, and a savory sauce. It was the perfect way to recharge for the remainder of our exploration.

Homemade Desserts and More

As we enjoyed our meal, we couldn’t help but notice the tempting display of homemade desserts. From decadent cakes to flaky pastries, Tasty Bites had something to satisfy every sweet tooth. While we opted to save dessert for later, the dessert selection alone was a compelling reason to return; additionally, with a quick trip to the internet, we discovered Tasty Bites is known for its dedication to quality, serving up affordable and delicious meals that keep both locals and visitors coming back for more.

Savoring Nature’s Bounty: The Story of Halcyon Days Cider Company

Halcyon Days Cider Company, located at 4135 S Lee Hwy in Natural Bridge, Virginia, invites visitors to enjoy its scenic surroundings and taste the product of their authentic cider-making process in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The cidery offers a peaceful atmosphere where guests can explore its 1.7-mile labyrinth that winds through thousands of apple trees, sample a variety of small-batch ciders, and relax in a charming setting surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Halcyon Days: A Deep Dive into the Name

The name “Halcyon Days” is steeped in rich historical and mythological significance. It originates from Greek mythology, specifically the story of Alcyone and Ceyx, a couple whose tragic love story led them to be transformed into kingfishers by the gods. This transformation allowed Alcyone to enjoy a period of calm weather—known as the “Halcyon Days”—during which she could lay her eggs without fear of storms. This phrase has since evolved to symbolize a time of peace and happiness, often evoking nostalgia for simpler days. In the context of Halcyon Days Cider Company, the name reflects the founders’ desire to create an oasis amidst the chaos of modern life, inviting visitors to relax and savor moments of tranquility. The cidery aims to embody this spirit by producing small-batch ciders that capture the essence of a more serene and joyful past, making it a fitting tribute to the idyllic connotations of its name.

Craftsmanship and Innovation

The cidery utilizes traditional cider-making techniques alongside modern innovations. This approach ensures that each bottle reflects a careful selection of apples sourced from over 50 different varieties, allowing the unique characteristics of each type to shine through. The cidery offers a diverse range of ciders to suit various preferences, whether one enjoys a crisp, dry cider with a touch of tartness or a sweeter, fruit-forward blend. Seasonal releases inspired by the orchard’s bounty further enhance the tasting experience, providing opportunities to explore new flavors throughout the year. By focusing on natural ingredients and eschewing artificial additives, Halcyon Days Cider Company aims to create authentic beverages that resonate with cider enthusiasts.

Environmental Stewardship

Halcyon Days Cider Company is not only committed to producing exceptional cider but also to protecting the environment that sustains it. The cidery follows sustainable and eco-friendly practices, ensuring that its orchards thrive for generations to come. They employ responsible farming techniques, minimizing their ecological footprint and preserving the natural beauty of the countryside.

Community and Gatherings

Beyond crafting cider, Halcyon Days is a place where the community gathers. The cidery hosts events, tastings, and tours, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the cider-making process and savor the results. It is a place where friends and families come together to celebrate the beauty of nature and the joys of sharing a glass of cider.

Exploring the Orchard Labyrinth

For those seeking a distinctive outdoor experience, Halcyon Days Cider Company features a captivating 1.7-mile labyrinth nestled within its orchard. This thoughtfully designed labyrinth offers a tranquil space for reflection and mindfulness, inviting visitors to wander through its winding paths surrounded by fragrant apple blossoms. As you meander through the labyrinth, you will encounter over 2,000 apple trees representing more than 50 different varieties, showcasing the rich diversity of apples and their historical journey from Central Asia to America. The labyrinth is modeled after the famous Chartres labyrinth in France and is laid out in an 11-circuit design. It leads to a pavilion that provides stunning 360-degree views, making it an ideal spot to relax and appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings. This enchanting addition enhances the cidery’s charm, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the serene environment while enjoying a unique connection to the land and its history. Whether you are looking for a peaceful stroll or a moment of contemplation, the labyrinth at Halcyon Days Cider Company offers an enriching experience that complements its commitment to quality cider-making.
