Exploring the Enigmatic Depths: The Caverns at Natural Bridge

The Caverns at Natural Bridge are a hidden wonder waiting to be discovered. Carved deep beneath the surface, these enchanting caverns offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore a subterranean world filled with awe-inspiring formations, underground rivers, and a rich geological history. In this “experience,” we will delve into the mesmerizing realm of the Caverns at Natural Bridge, shedding light on their geological significance and the captivating experience they provide to all who venture below.

Formation and Geological Significance

The Caverns at Natural Bridge owe their existence to the slow and patient work of nature. Over many, unknown years, rainwater seeped through the porous limestone rock of the Blue Ridge Mountains, dissolving the mineral deposits within the earth. As the water made its way downward, it left behind intricate and breathtaking formations that visitors marvel at today.

The most notable feature of these caverns is their vast array of stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites, which hang from the cave ceiling like delicate icicles, are formed when water containing dissolved minerals drips from the cave’s roof. As each droplet evaporates, it leaves behind a small deposit of calcite, eventually forming the icicle-shaped structures. Conversely, stalagmites grow upward from the cave floor when mineral-rich water droplets fall to the ground. Over time, these stalagmites can join with stalactites to create stunning columns.

Visitors to the Caverns at Natural Bridge will also encounter flowstones, draperies, and cave bacon. Flowstones are smooth, rounded formations that occur when water flows down sloping surfaces, depositing minerals and creating unique shapes and patterns. Draperies are thin, translucent sheets that drape from cave walls, creating an ethereal, curtain-like effect. Cave bacon, also known as “bacon strips,” results from alternating layers of minerals deposited over time, forming wavy, striped patterns reminiscent of—yes, bacon!

Exploration and Guided Tours

To experience the magic of the Natural Bridge Caverns, visitors embark on guided tours led by knowledgeable and friendly guides. These tours provide a captivating journey deep into the underground labyrinth, offering insights into the geological processes that shaped the caverns and the fascinating history of their discovery.

Tours generally last about 45 minutes and begin every 60 minutes. The underground environment can be chilly, and the ground can be slippery, so ensure you have appropriate footwear and consider bringing a jacket.

One of the highlights of the tour is the “Colossal Dome Room,” a vast chamber adorned with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites that have been growing for thousands of years. The room’s impressive dome-like ceiling and intricate formations create a surreal atmosphere, transporting visitors to another world entirely.

As you venture deeper into the caverns, you’ll also come across the “Mirror Lake,” a serene underground lake that reflects the cave’s formations, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. The tour guides will share stories about the folklore and legends associated with these underground wonders, adding a touch of mystery and intrigue to your journey.

Preservation and Conservation Efforts
The Natural Bridge Caverns are not just a natural wonder; they are also a testament to the importance of conservation. Efforts have been made to ensure that these delicate formations remain intact for future generations to enjoy. Lighting systems have been carefully designed to minimize the impact on the cave’s ecosystem, and strict rules are in place to protect the caverns from any harm.

In Summary
The Caverns at Natural Bridge offer a unique opportunity to venture deep beneath the surface and explore a world hidden from everyday sight. These caverns are a testament to the beauty and wonder of the natural world, even far beneath the surface. As you descend 34 stories into the depths of the Earth, you’ll not only witness the incredible geological processes that shaped these caverns but also gain a profound appreciation for the importance of preserving our planet’s natural wonders. So, the next time you find yourself on our side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, don’t miss the opportunity to embark on an underground adventure at the Caverns at Natural Bridge. Plan your visit, and prepare to be captivated by the subterranean marvels that await.

Buffalo Creek Escapade: Family Fun with Horseback Rides, Mountain Views and Starlit Evenings

Embarking on a family adventure one hopes it leads to unexpected joys and cherished memories. Our vacation on Buffalo Creek did not disappoint and was an amazing combination of tranquility and relaxation while effortlessly creating fun-filled memories.
Upon stepping into our cozy three-bedroom vacation rental, we were immediately struck by the breathtaking water views and the soothing sounds of the creek meandering around a grand rock wall and its adjacent beach. The magnificent views weren’t limited to the outdoors; they followed us into two of the bedrooms, the living room, the dining room, and best of all the screened-in porch, all having amazing views of the creek. Even inside, it felt as though we were still immersed in nature, with the large creek’s rhythmic flow and the embracing woods and water view out of more than half the windows.

Much time was spent around a campfire and fishing along the banks of Buffalo Creek. Laughter echoed through the trees with excitement from every tug on a line and pride in the catches, whether medium or small. This is one of many VA creeks stocked with trout; we also caught bass and perch with Rock River recommended small spinning lures.
As delightful as our fishing adventures and our campfire storytelling sessions were, modern children inevitably gravitate towards modern pastimes…. Thus, we also spent hours engrossed in the virtual worlds of Super Smash Brothers and the latest Mario game in between nature and meal times.

Despite all the fun and memories forged at our vacation rental it was still a unanimous family agreement, that our horse excursion was the highlight of our trip! The kids’ eyes sparkled with anticipation as they met their gentle mounts, and were given advice and instruction for our hour-long trail ride. Our guide was a really great teacher and her knowledge of the land and passion for the horses and riding made the experience all the more enjoyable. We definitely want to thank Rock River Experiences for recommending her!

The trail wove through the forest starting out, and at times, opening up for stunning mountain views. Above is a picture taken of a super picturesque pond, its surface mirroring the expansive blue sky. Under our guide’s watchful eye, we all felt a sense of freedom and connection with both our equine companions and the truly beautiful nature environment. The kids, in particular, were enamored with the horses, having formed a bond on our adventure. After an hour of riding, with hearts full and spirits high, we all were reluctant to dismount.

As the stars began to twinkle overhead, we finished our day with the tried and true combination  of campfire and s’mores. The creek and rock wall provided a beautiful backdrop and the gentle hum of the creek, combined with the crackle of the campfire, added the perfect soundtrack. The kids were amazed at the stars shining so brightly, as can only happen with the lack of city lights. Buffalo Creek offered us more than just a vacation, more than just a break from the daily grind; it gave us memories to cherish, and experiences the kids will never forget.

We will be back again to stay and will follow more recommendations from Rock River Experiences, and to visit Natural Bridge (pictured below). On top of that, we will of course be riding again and looking forward to staying in the same rental or joining with 1-2 other families and staying at their Mountain Lodge, or maybe with an even larger group of families, rent the Buffalo Bungalow again and its neighbor next door the 10 bedroom Buffalo Creek Retreat and have an even grander celebration. We can’t wait to come back!

The rugged terrain of Rockbridge County, characterized by dense forests, steep mountains, and winding rivers, provides ample cover for mysterious beings to remain hidden from human eyes. The lore surrounding Sasquatch in this region is not just a recent phenomenon but a legacy, passed down through generations, embedding an intriguing layer of mystery into the county’s historical narrative.
Natural Bridge, a must visit destination and a striking geological feature in our county, is central to local Sasquatch folklore. Hikers and campers in this vicinity have reported encounters with large, hairy figures, shadowed among the ancient formations, with their footprints mysteriously imprinted in the earth, stoking the fires of legend and speculation.

Rockbridge Rocks: Spreading Love with Painted Rocks

“Rockbridge Rocks” is a Facebook page with over six thousand followers, many who paint rocks and combine that with easter bunny mojo to spread positive vibes and connect with others. We interviewed Joanna Higginbotham on how she got started with the group and her experience in the pro-bono rock painting and giving away business. Spoiler alert…. having a hobby that brings joy to others is a win win!

As an example this is the first message Joanna received when she started painting and hiding rocks: “My daughter found the yellow chicken “being unique is better…” one over the weekend and CHERISHES it. In fact she’s sleeping with it and begged me to let her bring it to school to share with her friends. You brought a young girl a very positive message and a lot of happiness – THANK YOU!”

Q&A with Joanna Higginbotham, rock painter and moderator of “Rockbridge Rocks” Facebook page:

Rock River: How did Rockbridge Rocks get started?

Joanna: Jennifer Hopkins started Rockbridge Rocks because her son found a pumpkin rock at his school and he was so excited about it so she reached out to the group who hid that particular rock and they told her how to get started with her own group. And the rest, I suppose, is history. LOL.

Rock River: What year was this?

Joanna: 2017

Rock River: How and when did you get started with Rockbridge Rocks?

Joanna: Not exactly sure but I started painting rocks about 6 or 7 years ago. I noticed on Facebook Jennifer had started Rockbridge Rocks Facebook page and saw where people were posting rocks and talking about hiding them. I checked into it a bit more and also read up on kindness rocks and it just seemed like such a nice thing to do in our community. Honestly, I had no clue I would even enjoy painting rocks, but it has been very therapeutic and I just love it.

Rock River: Who else is involved?

Joanna: Anyone can join us and paint rocks and post when they hide them. Many, many people have contributed in that way, and we welcome anyone to join us. But as far as the Facebook page along with Jennifer Hopkins and myself, Brandy Hostetter also paints rocks and helps and is an administrator with the Rockbridge Rocks” Facebook page.

Rock River: Where do ya’ll hide your rocks?

Joanna: Most of my rocks get hidden in Glasgow, Natural Bridge, Buena Vista, Lexington, and Fairfield. Once in a while, if I head towards Staunton or Waynesboro, I hide a few in those areas too.

Rock River: What is one of your favorite stories about how your rocks affected people positively?

There are so many… I actually saved the exact words a lady used as it was the first feedback I received years ago. That one is very special to me; I can find that and send to you, but probably my favorite story is when a family found one of my Halloween rocks at the Natural Bridge Zoo and contacted me to let me know. They said they were taking it back home to Baltimore for their grandchildren to hide there. I mentioned how it’s always neat to see my creations travel and that I was excited about it going to Baltimore, because my daddy was such a huge Baltimore Orioles fan before he passed away. I didn’t expect to ever hear from them again, but then I received some photos and a message saying they weren’t able to hide my rock inside the stadium, but they got as close as they could, the Babe Ruth statue right outside of Oriole Park at Camden Yards!! Oh my goodness!! These kind-hearted people… people I don’t even know… did that for me even when they didn’t have to! I cannot express how much that means to me!! I have been told that some of my rocks have touched the lives of others and that truly makes me happy. But in this case, I am the one who was touched in the most wonderful way!! I will never forget this.

Rock River: How many rocks have you painted and hidden?
Joanna: Not sure, but I know I have hidden hundreds since I started painting.
Rock River: What products do you use to paint rocks?
Joanna: I use acrylic paint. Usually the little Apple Barrel bottles from Walmart. I prefer matte over glossy. I get Mod Podge to seal them with and also paint brushes from Walmart.
Rock River: How do you get your inspiration for what you paint on rocks?
Joanna: I get my inspiration from pretty much everywhere. I know I am not a professional, but if I see something I like I try to play around with it and put my own spin on it. And I enjoy doing holiday rocks, especially Halloween and Christmas.
Rock River: What would you recommend to someone wanting to take this idea home to their local area after a vacation?
Joanna: I just recommend that they have fun with it. You don’t have to spend a fortune to paint a few rocks. And if you don’t want to paint actual characters or things like that, words can be encouraging too. A lot of my rocks have positive words or sayings. And if they choose to start a group or join a group of rock painters in their area, they should put the name of the group on the back of their rocks so that the person who finds them can post it if they want to and let people know they found it. A lot of the time people do not post the rocks they find. I like when they do, but if they don’t it’s okay, too. I feel like if one of my rocks makes a positive difference in someone else’s day, that’s all that matters. And I think it’s fine if somebody decides to keep one. Or they can rehide it. It’s totally up to them.

Rock River: Where do you source your rocks?
Joanna: I get my rocks from various places in Rockbridge County. Sometimes the shape of the rock determines what I paint. Flatter rocks are my favorites, but I will play around with pretty much any shape.
Rock River:
Thank you for taking the time to share your hobby and for choosing a hobby that brings joy to others.
Joanna:
Thank you for showing such an interest! Rockbridge rocks has made such a huge and positive difference in my life and hopefully it has made a difference, and will continue to make a difference, in the lives of others, as well.

Fireworks, Fireflies, and Friends: A 4th of July Show in Buena Vista, VA

I arrived 5 minutes before the show and easily found parking. After meeting up with friends, we quickly went back to the car for some cold water. We still made it back in time to claim the baseball dugout all to ourselves, just as the show began.

There were people everywhere of course; even in a small town fireworks bring a crowd, but plenty of space to spread out. Most people were both parked and sitting in chairs around the tennis courts and picnic table area. We had built-in seating in the dugout and looking through the chain link fence added a feeling of nostalgia for me. We also alternated walking a few feet into the Baseball Field to stand and take videos. If going with a group bring chairs and set up at home base or pitcher’s mound for a great vantage point. Or many watched from their air conditioned cars or the bleachers.

I am pretty sure the fireworks were set off from near the double decker deck and playground, a beloved spot where many of us enjoy grabbing take-out or packing a picnic while socializing and relaxing, taking in the stunning mountain and vista views from an amazing vantage point overlooking Buena Vista.

The exit was surprisingly quick. It only took 3-4 minutes to reach the main road from my car, compared to the usual one minute. This made it one of the easiest exits I’ve experienced at a 4th of July fireworks show.

The show itself lasted around 18 minutes and was action packed the whole time. I hope someone can give the actual number but I would guess around 450 mortars total between a very consistent pace of “explosions” with an action packed nearly minute long grand finale. We’re posting 4 videos to share the highlights:

  1. The last 11 seconds of the show
  2. A 23-second clip from the beginning, featuring a unique shimmering star effect
  3. My favorite: a clip where a firefly photobombs the video, as if to say, “I’m the original natural fireworks!”
  4. The grand finale, capturing most of the spectacular ending

All in all great night, kudos to the city of Buena Vista for a great show, good friends and of course thanks to never ending symphony of fireflies we have in Rockbridge County from spring to fall lighting up every night.
