🌕🩸 A Nearly Total “Blood Moon” Lit Up the Night Sky! 🩸🌕

Did you catch it? On the night of Thursday, August 27 into early Friday, August 28, the full Moon passed deep through Earth’s dark inner shadow—creating an incredible 96.2% partial lunar eclipse. Only a tiny bright sliver of the Moon remained outside the umbra at peak eclipse!

✨ Even though it was technically a partial eclipse, it looked very close to a total “Blood Moon,” with much of the Moon glowing shades of copper, rusty orange, and deep red.

Why did the Moon turn red?
🌎 Earth’s atmosphere acts like a giant sunset filter. It bends sunlight into Earth’s shadow while filtering out much of the blue light. The remaining red and orange light reaches the Moon—giving it that dramatic coppery-red Blood Moon appearance.

How rare was it?
🌕 A real total lunar eclipse—what people usually call a Blood Moon—happens somewhere on Earth roughly yearly-ish. But from any one backyard, it is more of an every-few-years experience because the Moon must be above your horizon when the eclipse occurs.

🔥 This was a special in-between event: the Moon was 96.2% covered by Earth’s darkest shadow, making it the deepest partial lunar eclipse since September 2024.

When is the next one?
🔭 The next lunar eclipse visible from the United States is a small partial eclipse on January 11–12, 2028—but it will cover only about 2.4% of the Moon, nothing close to this dramatic event.

🌕🩸 The next total lunar eclipse occurs on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2028. It will be visible from parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, the Pacific, Alaska, northwestern Canada, and parts of western North America—but it will not be a widely visible event for most of the U.S ... 🌕 Tonight’s full moon has many names—and every one of them feels like late summer.

Most commonly called the Sturgeon Moon, August’s full moon is also known as the Corn Moon, Grain Moon, Green Corn Moon, Black Cherries Moon, Lynx Moon, Flying Up Moon, and Lightning Moon.

These names reflect the natural world and the season: plentiful fish, ripening corn and grain, summer storms, berries, wildlife, and the changing sky as summer begins to give way to fall.

The Full Sturgeon Moon reaches peak illumination around 12:18 AM Friday, August 28, but it will shine bright and nearly full all night Thursday. Take a minute to step outside, look up, and enjoy it. 🌕✨

RIP to a legend of music, generosity, literacy, and love.

A lot of people know Dolly Parton as an amazing singer and songwriter, but what she did to help others is even more amazing than her incredible career.

Inspired by her own father, Robert Lee Parton, who never learned to read or write, Dolly launched Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995 through the Dollywood Foundation. The idea was simple but powerful: mail one free, high-quality, age-appropriate book every month to children from birth until they turn five—at no cost to the family and with no income requirements.

What began as a local effort in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, became a worldwide program. By the time of her passing, it had gifted more than 300 million books to children across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. In recent years, the Imagination Library mailed more than 3 million books every month, reaching families around the world. Each child enrolled from birth can receive about 60 books by the time they “graduate” at age five.

The first book is often The Little Engine That Could, and the book selections are carefully chosen to build vocabulary, early literacy skills, imagination, confidence, school readiness, and a lifelong love of reading. Research has found that children in the program can develop stronger early reading readiness than children who are not enrolled. For many families, those monthly books are not just stories—they are a child’s first personal library and a special moment shared between parent and child.

Beyond the books, Dolly’s generosity touched many other areas. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she created scholarship programs and the Buddy Program, which encouraged pairs of students to stay in school and rewarded them when they graduated. The program helped reduce the high-school dropout rate in her home region from 35% to 6%.

She supported children’s hospitals, education initiatives, disaster relief, and Appalachian communities for decades. After the devastating 2016 Smoky Mountains wildfires, her My People Fund gave qualifying families who lost their homes $1,000 per month for six months. In 2024, she donated $1 million for Hurricane Helene relief, and her businesses and foundation contributed another $1 million.

Dolly also supported wildlife conservation and earned recognition for helping protect bald eagles. She used her voice, money, and platform to help people—but she did it in a way that always felt personal, practical, and rooted in the mountains and people who raised her.

Dolly often said the Imagination Library was the achievement that meant the most to her—more than the chart-topping hits, Grammys, movies, or worldwide fame. She loved when children simply called her “the Book Lady.”

Active period: roughly August 3–28
Expected rate: low (~3 meteors per hour under ideal conditions), but known for occasional bright, slow-moving fireballs 🔥
Radiant: near the constellation Cygnus (the Swan) 🦢
Moon conditions this year are favorable: waxing crescent sets early and doesn’t interfere much 🌙

It’s a minor shower, so don’t expect a big display—but with moon conditions cooperating this year there’s a good chance of a few nice ones, especially if the clouds cooperate ☁️ and you’re in a low light-pollution area. 🌌

Best time to watch on Aug 17: The night of August 16–17 into the early morning hours of the 17th.
