Virginia Horse Center and Goshen Pass: A Scenic Drive Through the Heart of Virginia’s Beauty

Welcome to the beginning of a three-part Rock River Experience’s blog post, or what Rock River enthusiasts refer to as a “Rockbridge County Experience.” Before diving into the main event, the “highlights of a magical evening,” I must introduce our venue and stars:

The Venue

Brew Ridge Taps stands as a beacon for beer lovers, enthusiasts, and casual drinkers alike, a celebration of craft beer culture and small-town charm. Boasting an impressive array of local and regional brews, it provides patrons with an opportunity to explore a diverse range of flavors and styles. From hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts and everything in between, there’s a brew to satisfy every palate.

Much More Than a Bar

While beer is the star attraction, Brew Ridge Taps also offers a variety of other beverages, including sodas, ciders, wines, and even canned cocktails. Their commitment to variety ensures a stimulating experience, and the friendly staff creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere—everyone is made to feel like a member of the Brew Ridge Taps family. New to craft beers? No problem. Whether behind the bar or serving your table, the friendly staff is knowledgeable and passionate about their offerings, ready to guide customers through selecting a single beverage or a flight of beers

More Than Just Beer

Brew Ridge Taps’ “Wafflewiches” are a creative twist on traditional sandwiches, using freshly made waffles in the place of bread. This unique concept adds a playful element to the dining experience, offering a delightful contrast in textures and flavors. The Wafflewich menu features a variety of fillings, catering to a range of tastes – from classic combinations to more adventurous flavors. If you would like to create your own adventure (as I do), you might, for instance, order a Reuben but substitute the traditional rye waffle with a jalapeno cheddar waffle. Or, you can transform any Wafflewich into a salad or a wrap. Brew Ridge Taps’ flexibility allows customers to enjoy their favorite flavors in a form that suits their preferences and dietary needs. Maybe you just want a snack? Brew Ridge Taps has you covered. Try a flight of peanuts, freshly baked soft pretzels, nachos, or a delicious quesadilla.

A Hub for Local Culture

Brew Ridge Taps has become a hub for local culture in Lexington, regularly hosting events: live music, trivia, and community gatherings. It’s a place where locals and tourists alike can converge to enjoy good drinks and great company. The establishment plays a vital role in supporting and showcasing local talent.

The Final Draft

Brew Ridge Taps is more than a bar, more than a stellar example of the thriving craft beer scene in Lexington, VA, and more than a place for unique, delicious food. It’s a place alive and bubbling with the spirit of Rockbridge County, where the community comes to life for locals and those just passing through. Everyone is welcome to share the Brew Ridge Taps experience.

The Rock Stars in a Nutshell

When Bruce Allen and Jason Burke’s paths converged, it sparked a creative synergy and gave birth to a unique sound, deeply rooted in traditional genres yet infused with a modern sensibility and embodying a timeless sound. Do I exaggerate? No. I believe you owe it to yourself to see this dynamic duo in person.

The Beginning

Some might say it all started in the Food Lion parking lot in Buena Vista, VA early summer of 2017, but really it’s more complicated than that… You see, the Kevin Wallace band featuring Bruce Allen on guitar and vocals needed both a second lead guitar and a drummer for an upcoming show at the Virginia Horse Center. This is where Stan Coffey enters our story and recommends Jason Burke, who happened to be available and was even able to recommend a drummer, Andrew Duff, to complete the band. The day was saved, a great time was had by all who attended the show, most never even knowing these five men had never played together before.

Faith and Luck

Later that same summer, Jason’s mother, Rachel Burke, was visiting from out of town, and they decided to go to Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company for dinner. Bruce was performing, recognized Jason from their gig weeks earlier, and warmly invited him on stage where they performed for the first time as a duo.

The Plot Thickens

The chance meeting at Devil’s Backbone led to a planned jam session at Mountain Music Café. Bruce and Jason both sensed something special after just the first 30 minutes, and later that same year, they played their first show as a duo at the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park in Natural Bridge, VA. This led to more engagements, and they quickly became local celebrities, captivating audiences with their heartfelt performances and authentic original compositions. Their music, often reflective of the scenic beauty and rich history of Rockbridge County, resonated with both young and old, creating a bridge across generations.

Mentors and Muses

Allen and Burke’s collaboration extends beyond their, now, hundreds of performances together. They have become mentors and an inspiration for aspiring musicians in the area, embodying the spirit of Rockbridge community. Their presence has invigorated the local music scene, attracting more artists and music lovers to a town already blessed with so many amazing artists. On the commercial front, Allen has produced the music of a string of local artists that have gone on to chart on national country radio, harkening back to the days he helped write the #1 chart-topping country song “Diggin up Bones” by Randy Travis.

The Near Future

Upcoming projects for Bruce and Jason include concerts, community events, collaborations with other local artists, and … drum roll … potential radio release of new original songs! Rockbridge County is lucky to be home to many world-class musicians, including my favorite two-man acoustic band, slated to be inducted into the “Virginia [Grand Ole] Opry” on Dec 7th, 2023.

The Best is Yet to Come

The story of Bruce Allen and Jason Burke is just beginning, and it is more than a musical collaboration. It’s a narrative of passion, resilience, community spirit, and above all a desire to spread love and “keep music live.”

Highlights of A Magical Evening with Bruce and Jason at Brew Ridge Taps

I have experienced the 1-2 punch of the musical stylings of Bruce Allen and Jason Burke, combined with the food, drink, and atmosphere of Brew Ridge Taps, three times now. I am lucky!

When you watch Bruce and Jason, it’s not just a show, it’s not just great music, it’s an immersive experience; because Bruce and Jason make it so! They have fun! They invite audience participation in every show they play, and I do mean “play.” It’s not work when you are having as much fun as Bruce and Jason do performing together. They have what just can’t be faked. They love what they do, and they love their audience.

Often featured with Bruce and Jason is Susan Byers Tedrow. She is an accomplished pianist and a good friend. It is a treat when she attends their shows and lends her voice, singing anything from The Doobie Brothers, June Cash, to the 4 Non Blondes epic 90s hit “What’s going on.” Other friends you might hear sing at any given show include, but are definitely not limited to, Stan Coffey, Brian Dearing, Bobbi Folk, Mark Tedrow, Wayne Humphrey, Ken Talley… I even watched one night when world champion Elvis Presley impersonator Michael Hoover joined them on stage. With Bruce and Jason, it’s always the more the merrier.

What specific songs might one hear if you go to a Bruce and Jason show? Hard to say. Their repertoire is massive, from classic country and rock to modern country and rock and everything in between, jazz to folk and gospel. They routinely mash up two different songs, making you wonder for a second what is happening as they effortlessly switch back and forth between the songs, making it in ways all their own. While I might request “I’ve got a Name” by Jim Croce or John Denver’s “Take me Home,” you will find Bruce and Jason receptive to most any request with an astonishing ability to fill it or ask them to play an original song, and you will not be disappointed.

Some of Bruce and Jason’s original songs include, but are not limited to, “Trying To Get By,” “American Zoo,” “Hey Little Girl,” and the soon-to-be-released “Come Home Day” and “Faith and Luck.”

You are also likely to hear “Happy Birthday” and feel like you are part of multiple celebrations when you go see Bruce and Jason play. Along with asking for song requests, they ask if there are any celebrations they can put a heartfelt musical note on.

Well, onto the food, drink, and venue: As a brew-club member, I am not new to the scene, but this is my first time taking pictures and notes. Wanting to stay light on my feet, I opted for a Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat Ale and the Mount Vesuvius: ham, pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, Duke’s mayo, oil and vinegar.

This eclectic combination is normally served on a basil asiago waffle, but I ordered it in a wrap. I like the black bean salad, but you can also select Mrs. Vicki potato chips or coleslaw as your side. And yes, it is as good as it sounds!

As this night at Brew Ridge Taps progressed, I also enjoyed a Schlafly Pumpkin Ale. Maybe two… who’s counting?

I am not always a fan of seasonal pumpkin selections, but this is a truly well-balanced brew—the personal favorite of my wife and Autumn, the owner (pictured below goofing around with one of her patron’s beers). No matter your taste, with the largest selection of craft beers in Lexington, along with wines and ciders, it’s safe to say there is a food/beverage pairing for you at Brew Ridge Taps. Pro Tip: Before the kitchen closes, order a side of chicken salad or pimento cheese and a bag of jalapeno chips to go. Whether you eat it as a midnight snack or for lunch the next day, you will want to thank me for $5.99 well spent!

There are many amazing watering holes in the world, but you would be hard-pressed to find a place as warm, welcoming, and unassuming as Brew Ridge Taps. Even without live music, it is still an amazing place to go for a bite or a brew, a place where you leave your problems, worries, and drama at the door, a place where all are welcome to either appreciate or learn: the best of life is conversation.

Exploring the Enigmatic Depths: The Caverns at Natural Bridge

The Caverns at Natural Bridge are a hidden wonder waiting to be discovered. Carved deep beneath the surface, these enchanting caverns offer visitors a unique opportunity to explore a subterranean world filled with awe-inspiring formations, underground rivers, and a rich geological history. In this “experience,” we will delve into the mesmerizing realm of the Caverns at Natural Bridge, shedding light on their geological significance and the captivating experience they provide to all who venture below.

Formation and Geological Significance

The Caverns at Natural Bridge owe their existence to the slow and patient work of nature. Over many, unknown years, rainwater seeped through the porous limestone rock of the Blue Ridge Mountains, dissolving the mineral deposits within the earth. As the water made its way downward, it left behind intricate and breathtaking formations that visitors marvel at today.

The most notable feature of these caverns is their vast array of stalactites and stalagmites. Stalactites, which hang from the cave ceiling like delicate icicles, are formed when water containing dissolved minerals drips from the cave’s roof. As each droplet evaporates, it leaves behind a small deposit of calcite, eventually forming the icicle-shaped structures. Conversely, stalagmites grow upward from the cave floor when mineral-rich water droplets fall to the ground. Over time, these stalagmites can join with stalactites to create stunning columns.

Visitors to the Caverns at Natural Bridge will also encounter flowstones, draperies, and cave bacon. Flowstones are smooth, rounded formations that occur when water flows down sloping surfaces, depositing minerals and creating unique shapes and patterns. Draperies are thin, translucent sheets that drape from cave walls, creating an ethereal, curtain-like effect. Cave bacon, also known as “bacon strips,” results from alternating layers of minerals deposited over time, forming wavy, striped patterns reminiscent of—yes, bacon!

Exploration and Guided Tours

To experience the magic of the Natural Bridge Caverns, visitors embark on guided tours led by knowledgeable and friendly guides. These tours provide a captivating journey deep into the underground labyrinth, offering insights into the geological processes that shaped the caverns and the fascinating history of their discovery.

Tours generally last about 45 minutes and begin every 60 minutes. The underground environment can be chilly, and the ground can be slippery, so ensure you have appropriate footwear and consider bringing a jacket.

One of the highlights of the tour is the “Colossal Dome Room,” a vast chamber adorned with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites that have been growing for thousands of years. The room’s impressive dome-like ceiling and intricate formations create a surreal atmosphere, transporting visitors to another world entirely.

As you venture deeper into the caverns, you’ll also come across the “Mirror Lake,” a serene underground lake that reflects the cave’s formations, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. The tour guides will share stories about the folklore and legends associated with these underground wonders, adding a touch of mystery and intrigue to your journey.

Preservation and Conservation Efforts
The Natural Bridge Caverns are not just a natural wonder; they are also a testament to the importance of conservation. Efforts have been made to ensure that these delicate formations remain intact for future generations to enjoy. Lighting systems have been carefully designed to minimize the impact on the cave’s ecosystem, and strict rules are in place to protect the caverns from any harm.

In Summary
The Caverns at Natural Bridge offer a unique opportunity to venture deep beneath the surface and explore a world hidden from everyday sight. These caverns are a testament to the beauty and wonder of the natural world, even far beneath the surface. As you descend 34 stories into the depths of the Earth, you’ll not only witness the incredible geological processes that shaped these caverns but also gain a profound appreciation for the importance of preserving our planet’s natural wonders. So, the next time you find yourself on our side of the Blue Ridge Mountains, don’t miss the opportunity to embark on an underground adventure at the Caverns at Natural Bridge. Plan your visit, and prepare to be captivated by the subterranean marvels that await.

VA Mountain Beauty, Created by AI, on a Rainy Day

This AI artwork reflects the beauty of mountains. I love the mountains of Virginia.

The joy, I receive when I see it, reaches the very depth of my offbeat vision, and this is what I create sitting here in my chair as a mist of rain drizzles down my front window. Gently my thoughts flow like the river and the gently sloped mountains into whatever comes to mind next.  Have a great day everybody!

Guest Experience/Blog: Story and Art by R Burke Visuals

Winter Warmth at Ben Salem Wayside:  Serene Waters on the Maury River

Despite a dusting of snow just a few days ago, today’s visit to Ben Salem Wayside was graced with a surprising and balmy 70 degrees, showcasing the Maury River and its surroundings in a serene state perfect for photography. The riverside beach, typically a magnet for swimmers and sunbathers, lay quiet, its sands untouched by footprints, while the river itself keeps on moving, stocked and ready for anglers to return. Picnic tables, charcoal grills, and historical lock remnants sat idle, waiting for the return of visitors to this tranquil park, which melds historical significance with the undeniable beauty of Rockbridge County.

The Maury River itself flowed with a gentle and purposeful rhythm. Known for being a haven for anglers, especially with its regular stocking between October and May, the river today seemed to await their return, its waters teeming with the promise of a rewarding catch. The quietness of the beach extended to the entire park, where picnic tables and charcoal grills stood unused but inviting, ready for families and friends to gather once more on days as warm or warmer than today.

A notable feature of Ben Salem Wayside is its historical significance. The remnants of the old lock system, a relic from the late 1800s when the park was a bustling hub for canal boats, offer a tangible connection to the past. These historical structures not only provide a unique backdrop for photographs but also serve as a reminder of the area’s rich heritage.

Surrounding the park, the scenic vistas of Rockbridge County add to the charm. The intertwining of history and natural beauty is a hallmark of both Ben Salem Wayside and Rockbridge County. Whether it’s the height of summer or an unexpectedly warm day in winter, the park offers a peaceful retreat. On days like this, unseasonably warm and clear, the beauty of Ben Salem Wayside shines through in a different light. The contrast of recent snow with today’s warmth highlights the area’s diverse appeal. It’s a reminder that the allure of natural spaces like this one transcends seasons, continually offering new perspectives and experiences to those who visit.

Panther Falls: Rockbridge County’s Natural Waterpark!

Panther Falls, located on the Pedlar River in Vesuvius, Virginia, is a treasured Rockbridge county destination known for its picturesque cascading waterfalls and natural swimming holes. It is an ideal spot to capture unforgettable images in any season. Throughout the year, the area’s natural beauty provides a diverse palette of colors and scenery, from the lush greenery of spring to the rich hues of autumn. Whether you’re a professional photographer or looking for a great backdrop for a family picture, Panther Falls does not disappoint.

In addition to its visual appeal, the area offers a unique blend of solitude and sociability. If you seek a peaceful retreat, you can visit during the quieter months, when you’ll likely have the place to yourself. On the other hand, if you prefer a more vibrant atmosphere, summer visits are perfect. The warmer months attract more visitors, turning the area into a lively hub of activity where you can mingle with other nature lovers, making new friends while diving in the cool waters and sharing experiences. For those seeking a thrill, take a daring twenty-foot leap off the towering rock shelves that flank the main waterfall!

Tips and Recommendations

  • Parking: The parking lot can be quite busy in the summer, often remaining packed from early afternoon until early evening. To avoid crowds, it’s recommended to visit weekdays if you can or go early.
  • Footwear: Due to the muddy nature of the trail, wearing sturdy shoes is advisable over flip-flops.
  • Relaxation: To enjoy the majestic backdrop and calming sounds of the waterfall and river longer than a photo op, bring along a hammock, folding chairs, water, a picnic, etc. You are even allowed to bring a tent and camp overnight. Just remember to bring supplies, including trash bags, as there is no concession stand or trash cans and everything you bring in you must take with you. Please leave the area as beautiful as when you came! If the main falls are too busy for your taste, upstream and downstream from the falls are several relaxing pools and areas that are generally less busy and offer more privacy.
  • Nearby Hiking: Close to the falls is the Cole Mountain Trail (sometimes called the Cold Mountain Trail), known for its stunning views from mountain meadows. Many like to do this hike and then cool off in the many watering holes of Panther Falls.

Panther Falls stands as one of Rockbridge County’s favored destinations, appealing to both locals and visitors alike. Its breathtaking scenery and tranquil ambiance offer a genuine connection to nature, inviting all who venture there to immerse themselves in its beauty. From the majestic cascading waterfalls to the serene swimming holes, Panther Falls embodies the essence of natural splendor, providing a sanctuary for relaxation, adventure, and meaningful experiences. Whether you seek solace in solitude or camaraderie amidst fellow nature enthusiasts, Panther Falls promises an unforgettable journey, leaving indelible memories and fostering a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

Blue Ridge Mountain Views and the Sounds of “Hoss” – Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery, Featuring the Music of Jason Hostetter

Jason Hostetter and Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery have been a staple of Rockbridge County for many years. If you appreciate well crafted wine, beer and music you probably already are aware of these Rockbridge County favorites, but if you haven’t discovered them yet, you definitely will want to check them out!

Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery, located at 60 Great Valley Lane in Natural Bridge, Virginia, is a well known and celebrated establishment by both locals and visitors.

They blend a traditional vineyard with the innovation of a craft brewery. Renowned for its artisanal Belgian farmhouse-style beers and a selection of wines from their 6-acre vineyard, the venue offers a unique tasting experience in an incredibly picturesque setting, showcasing amazing mountain vista views.

Enhancing the atmosphere this afternoon was the musical talent of Jason Hostetter, a gifted guitarist and vocalist. He is known for his diverse performances, which include a wide variety of genres, spanning from the 50s to the present. Jason’s deep voice is particularly well-suited for songs by artists like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. But he maintains his own style with his unique voice, as well as being a skilled guitarist, improvising and adding a little something extra to already great tunes. He has been a featured performer at local events such as “Cheers with the Chamber,” “Balloons Over Rockbridge,” and “Rockin’ the Gorge”, and maintains an active schedule of bookings in and around Rockbridge County and up and down the east coast.

Back to our venue: Along with great beer and wine, Great Valley provides a variety of snacks, including chips, charcuterie, and cheese. Additionally, the venue often hosts food trucks, especially during live music events, to offer a variety of food to complement the tastings.

Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery is more than just a destination for wine and beer connoisseurs; it’s a vibrant cultural venue. It combines the enjoyment of locally-produced beverages with the scenic splendor of the Shenandoah Valley and the rich musical experiences provided by talented artists like Jason Hostetter. This combination of fine drinks, stunning views, and quality entertainment makes it a must-visit spot in Rockbridge County!

Speaking of Jason Hostetter, aka “Hoss”, his shows are known for their wide-ranging musical selection and engaging delivery. He plays at least a little bit of everything, but despite his young age, he will tell you the 60s and 70s are his favorite decades.

Whether you are already a fan or want a great introduction to some amazing music of the past, you do not want to miss a chance to see “Hoss” perform. I love to hear him sing Johnny, Waylon, Willie, Glen, Coe, Prine, and so many more classic artists. He sings “The Highwayman” and changes his voice for all 4 singers!  Hearing “Hoss” sing with his own distinctive voice, and also channel amazing performers of the past, makes for an unforgettable show.

As far as more modern music, it is tough to pick favorites from so many great artists in his repertoire. I particularly enjoy his renditions of Chris Stapleton, Darius Rucker, Steve Earle, Sturgil Simpson, Tyler Childress, Colby Acuff,  Blake Shelton, Toby Keith, Jamey Johnson, and so many more.

He can rock out “Operator” by Jim Croce, play a medley, switching from The Marshall Tucker Band, to Led Zeppelin, play instrumental Pink Floyd, giving his voice a short respite, and then deliver great renditions of The Eagles, CCR, or Robert Earl Keen. After seeing over a dozen shows it truly seems the list goes on forever and the party never ends!

Jason Hostetter puts on an amazing show by himself, but I would be remiss not to mention, he sometimes performs with other amazing musicians, most notably as “Hoss and the Soss” and “Hoss and the Boss.” Jeff Mason, aka “Soss”, was somewhat of a mentor to “Hoss” and is one heck of a singer, bass guitar player, drummer, and overall multi-instrumentalist! Jeff was also a long time member of big time local favorite group, The Red Hill Band. Stacey Stevens, aka the “Boss”, may wear a suit and tie 9-5, but is happiest with a guitar in his hands, and boy does he know how to use it! He literally has a degree in “shredding.” Stacey does double duty for several bands, both singing and shredding the guitar, with Little Marvin and the Martians and Southpaw. Jeff Mason also plays bass for Little Marvin and the Martians. As you may have noticed Jason Hostetter has long been a part of an amazing group of local musicians that jam together, support and root for each other. We are truly lucky to have this Nashville level talent in Rockbridge, VA!

Multiple times I have been lucky enough to experience the combination of Great Valley and the super talented Jason Hostetter. Every time “Hoss” plays I hear tons of my favorite songs, and yet every time, I hear something I have never heard him play before. I can not recommend this Rockbridge combo enough!  If you know of a place on earth enjoying a better view, better people, better wine/beer/music combo, please let me know so I can check it out! You can see Hoss at Great Valley Brewery and Winery on June 21, May 12, July 21, August 30 and September 22.
