Keeping Music Live At Brew Ridge Taps with Bruce Allen and Jason Burke

Welcome to the beginning of a three-part Rock River Experience’s blog post, or what Rock River enthusiasts refer to as a “Rockbridge County Experience.” Before diving into the main event, the “highlights of a magical evening,” I must introduce our venue and stars:

The Venue

Brew Ridge Taps stands as a beacon for beer lovers, enthusiasts, and casual drinkers alike, a celebration of craft beer culture and small-town charm. Boasting an impressive array of local and regional brews, it provides patrons with an opportunity to explore a diverse range of flavors and styles. From hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts and everything in between, there’s a brew to satisfy every palate.

Much More Than a Bar

While beer is the star attraction, Brew Ridge Taps also offers a variety of other beverages, including sodas, ciders, wines, and even canned cocktails. Their commitment to variety ensures a stimulating experience, and the friendly staff creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere—everyone is made to feel like a member of the Brew Ridge Taps family. New to craft beers? No problem. Whether behind the bar or serving your table, the friendly staff is knowledgeable and passionate about their offerings, ready to guide customers through selecting a single beverage or a flight of beers

More Than Just Beer

Brew Ridge Taps’ “Wafflewiches” are a creative twist on traditional sandwiches, using freshly made waffles in the place of bread. This unique concept adds a playful element to the dining experience, offering a delightful contrast in textures and flavors. The Wafflewich menu features a variety of fillings, catering to a range of tastes – from classic combinations to more adventurous flavors. If you would like to create your own adventure (as I do), you might, for instance, order a Reuben but substitute the traditional rye waffle with a jalapeno cheddar waffle. Or, you can transform any Wafflewich into a salad or a wrap. Brew Ridge Taps’ flexibility allows customers to enjoy their favorite flavors in a form that suits their preferences and dietary needs. Maybe you just want a snack? Brew Ridge Taps has you covered. Try a flight of peanuts, freshly baked soft pretzels, nachos, or a delicious quesadilla.

A Hub for Local Culture

Brew Ridge Taps has become a hub for local culture in Lexington, regularly hosting events: live music, trivia, and community gatherings. It’s a place where locals and tourists alike can converge to enjoy good drinks and great company. The establishment plays a vital role in supporting and showcasing local talent.

The Final Draft

Brew Ridge Taps is more than a bar, more than a stellar example of the thriving craft beer scene in Lexington, VA, and more than a place for unique, delicious food. It’s a place alive and bubbling with the spirit of Rockbridge County, where the community comes to life for locals and those just passing through. Everyone is welcome to share the Brew Ridge Taps experience.

The Rock Stars in a Nutshell

When Bruce Allen and Jason Burke’s paths converged, it sparked a creative synergy and gave birth to a unique sound, deeply rooted in traditional genres yet infused with a modern sensibility and embodying a timeless sound. Do I exaggerate? No. I believe you owe it to yourself to see this dynamic duo in person.

The Beginning

Some might say it all started in the Food Lion parking lot in Buena Vista, VA early summer of 2017, but really it’s more complicated than that… You see, the Kevin Wallace band featuring Bruce Allen on guitar and vocals needed both a second lead guitar and a drummer for an upcoming show at the Virginia Horse Center. This is where Stan Coffey enters our story and recommends Jason Burke, who happened to be available and was even able to recommend a drummer, Andrew Duff, to complete the band. The day was saved, a great time was had by all who attended the show, most never even knowing these five men had never played together before.

Faith and Luck

Later that same summer, Jason’s mother, Rachel Burke, was visiting from out of town, and they decided to go to Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company for dinner. Bruce was performing, recognized Jason from their gig weeks earlier, and warmly invited him on stage where they performed for the first time as a duo.

The Plot Thickens

The chance meeting at Devil’s Backbone led to a planned jam session at Mountain Music Café. Bruce and Jason both sensed something special after just the first 30 minutes, and later that same year, they played their first show as a duo at the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park in Natural Bridge, VA. This led to more engagements, and they quickly became local celebrities, captivating audiences with their heartfelt performances and authentic original compositions. Their music, often reflective of the scenic beauty and rich history of Rockbridge County, resonated with both young and old, creating a bridge across generations.

Mentors and Muses

Allen and Burke’s collaboration extends beyond their, now, hundreds of performances together. They have become mentors and an inspiration for aspiring musicians in the area, embodying the spirit of Rockbridge community. Their presence has invigorated the local music scene, attracting more artists and music lovers to a town already blessed with so many amazing artists. On the commercial front, Allen has produced the music of a string of local artists that have gone on to chart on national country radio, harkening back to the days he helped write the #1 chart-topping country song “Diggin up Bones” by Randy Travis.

The Near Future

Upcoming projects for Bruce and Jason include concerts, community events, collaborations with other local artists, and … drum roll … potential radio release of new original songs! Rockbridge County is lucky to be home to many world-class musicians, including my favorite two-man acoustic band, slated to be inducted into the “Virginia [Grand Ole] Opry” on Dec 7th, 2023.

The Best is Yet to Come

The story of Bruce Allen and Jason Burke is just beginning, and it is more than a musical collaboration. It’s a narrative of passion, resilience, community spirit, and above all a desire to spread love and “keep music live.”

Highlights of A Magical Evening with Bruce and Jason at Brew Ridge Taps

I have experienced the 1-2 punch of the musical stylings of Bruce Allen and Jason Burke, combined with the food, drink, and atmosphere of Brew Ridge Taps, three times now. I am lucky!

When you watch Bruce and Jason, it’s not just a show, it’s not just great music, it’s an immersive experience; because Bruce and Jason make it so! They have fun! They invite audience participation in every show they play, and I do mean “play.” It’s not work when you are having as much fun as Bruce and Jason do performing together. They have what just can’t be faked. They love what they do, and they love their audience.

Often featured with Bruce and Jason is Susan Byers Tedrow. She is an accomplished pianist and a good friend. It is a treat when she attends their shows and lends her voice, singing anything from The Doobie Brothers, June Cash, to the 4 Non Blondes epic 90s hit “What’s going on.” Other friends you might hear sing at any given show include, but are definitely not limited to, Stan Coffey, Brian Dearing, Bobbi Folk, Mark Tedrow, Wayne Humphrey, Ken Talley… I even watched one night when world champion Elvis Presley impersonator Michael Hoover joined them on stage. With Bruce and Jason, it’s always the more the merrier.

What specific songs might one hear if you go to a Bruce and Jason show? Hard to say. Their repertoire is massive, from classic country and rock to modern country and rock and everything in between, jazz to folk and gospel. They routinely mash up two different songs, making you wonder for a second what is happening as they effortlessly switch back and forth between the songs, making it in ways all their own. While I might request “I’ve got a Name” by Jim Croce or John Denver’s “Take me Home,” you will find Bruce and Jason receptive to most any request with an astonishing ability to fill it or ask them to play an original song, and you will not be disappointed.

Some of Bruce and Jason’s original songs include, but are not limited to, “Trying To Get By,” “American Zoo,” “Hey Little Girl,” and the soon-to-be-released “Come Home Day” and “Faith and Luck.”

You are also likely to hear “Happy Birthday” and feel like you are part of multiple celebrations when you go see Bruce and Jason play. Along with asking for song requests, they ask if there are any celebrations they can put a heartfelt musical note on.

Well, onto the food, drink, and venue: As a brew-club member, I am not new to the scene, but this is my first time taking pictures and notes. Wanting to stay light on my feet, I opted for a Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat Ale and the Mount Vesuvius: ham, pepperoni, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers, Duke’s mayo, oil and vinegar.

This eclectic combination is normally served on a basil asiago waffle, but I ordered it in a wrap. I like the black bean salad, but you can also select Mrs. Vicki potato chips or coleslaw as your side. And yes, it is as good as it sounds!

As this night at Brew Ridge Taps progressed, I also enjoyed a Schlafly Pumpkin Ale. Maybe two… who’s counting?

I am not always a fan of seasonal pumpkin selections, but this is a truly well-balanced brew—the personal favorite of my wife and Autumn, the owner (pictured below goofing around with one of her patron’s beers). No matter your taste, with the largest selection of craft beers in Lexington, along with wines and ciders, it’s safe to say there is a food/beverage pairing for you at Brew Ridge Taps. Pro Tip: Before the kitchen closes, order a side of chicken salad or pimento cheese and a bag of jalapeno chips to go. Whether you eat it as a midnight snack or for lunch the next day, you will want to thank me for $5.99 well spent!

There are many amazing watering holes in the world, but you would be hard-pressed to find a place as warm, welcoming, and unassuming as Brew Ridge Taps. Even without live music, it is still an amazing place to go for a bite or a brew, a place where you leave your problems, worries, and drama at the door, a place where all are welcome to either appreciate or learn: the best of life is conversation.

A Symphony of Tastes and Tunes: Keith Bryant at Rockbridge Winery and Brewery

A Symphony of Tastes and Tunes: Keith Bryant at Rockbridge Winery and Brewery
In the northern reaches of Rockbridge County, a fusion of music, wine, and now beer, celebrates the essence of local culture. Rockbridge Winery and Brewery is a combination of culture, tradition and beauty, where rows of grapevines gently sway in the breeze and the rustic charm of red barns and gazebos create an idyllic setting for a romantic evening or a great time out with friends. On this night it was the stage for the soulful country music of Keith Bryant. Here, the traditions of winemaking, beer brewing, and music come together to create an experience that is distinctively Virginian

Keith Bryant: A Voice of the Valley

Virginia’s own Keith Bryant brings to life the essence of country and southern rock through his music. His songs, woven with narratives of love, life, and the rustic charm of rural America, resonate deeply with his audience. Bryant’s voice, rich and smooth, deep yet warm, echoes the authenticity of the region, making his performances a heartfelt tribute to the American spirit.

Rockbridge Winery: A Testament to Virginia’s Wine Heritage

Rockbridge Winery, established in the early 1990s, has emerged as a pillar of Virginia’s rich winemaking history. Renowned for its award-winning wines, the winery reflects the unique environment  of the Shenandoah Valley. The beauty of its vineyards, with rows of thriving grapevines against the backdrop of the mountains, symbolizes the winery’s dedication to producing wines of exceptional quality. Each bottle from Rockbridge tells a story, a narrative steeped in the tradition and care that define Virginia’s winemaking.

The Birth and Rise of Rockbridge Brewery

Complementing its renowned winemaking, Rockbridge introduced its brewery, embracing the burgeoning craft beer movement. This venture into beer brewing marked a significant expansion of Rockbridge’s artisanal repertoire. The brewery offers a diverse range of small-batch beers, from the crisp and refreshing pilsners to the deep and complex stouts, broadening its appeal and showcasing the versatility of Rockbridge’s craftsmanship.

Celebrating Tradition and Innovation
The union of Bryant’s music with the winemaking and brewing artistry of Rockbridge is a testament to the rich heritage and innovative spirit of Rockbridge County. Here, traditions of country music, southern rock, viticulture, and brewing merge, creating a rich tapestry of experiences that reflect the soul of rural Virginia.

An Enchanting Evening Among the Vines
As the day wanes and the evening light casts a golden hue over the vineyards and brewery, the atmosphere at Rockbridge Winery and Brewery becomes enchanting. The strumming of Keith Bryant’s guitar, the laughter of visitors, and the clinking of glasses create a magical ambiance. It’s in this setting that the spirit of Rockbridge County comes alive – a celebration of music, wine, beer, natural beauty and local art that defines this special corner of Virginia.

An Immersive Holiday Experience with Charles Billingsley and Friends at The Virginia ‘Grand Ole’ Opry

I had the good fortune to attend a special concert event titled ‘It’s Christmas Time Again,’ part of The Virginia ‘Grand Ole’ Opry series, sponsored by Appalfolks of America. Held at the Historic Masonic Theatre located at 510 Main Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, the event featured Charles Billingsley with Bruce Allen and Jason Burke as the opening act. It combined local talent with national acclaim, offering an evening of joyous holiday music and community spirit.

Bruce Allen and Jason Burke, accompanied by Susan Tedrow, sang several classic Christmas songs, welcoming audience participation in favorites such as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” They also premiered original music. “Happy Hallow-Thanks-Mas,” a parody song, complete with hats and props and featuring laugh out loud lyrics such as “every emotion is set in motion from absolute fear to cheer,” “the best 3 months of the year” and “we do it all again next year,” poking fun at our consumer-driven society.

As with most performances by Allen and Burke, laughter and elicited emotion shared the stage, transitioning smoothly from humor to the solemnity of “Come Home Day.’ a patriotic homage to our men and women in uniform. With the beautiful backdrop of the historic theatre, highlighted by many in the audience waving their phone flashlights, it was truly a heart-touching experience, the singer/songwriters expressing their wishes for “Come Home Day” for our brave men and women to “our-town, USA.” After the short but sweet set, they were joined on stage by Justin Peery, the executive director of The Virginia Opry, for a special presentation as Bruce Allen and Jason Burke were honored with induction into the Virginia “Grand Ole” Opry.

The concert already off to a great start, we now come to the main event: In the world of contemporary Christian music, few names shine as brightly as Charles Billingsley. Renowned for his powerful vocal performances and deeply emotional connection to his music, Billingsley has established himself as one of the genre’s most respected and talented artists. He performed music from his acclaimed holiday album “It’s Christmas Time Again.” The album achieved significant success, debuting at #3 on the iTunes Top 5 Holiday albums, and his single ‘Silver Bells,’ has become a popular adult contemporary holiday hit and maintains a strong position on the Mediabase A/C Holiday Chart.

Before delving further into Charles Billingsley’s vocal performance, I would be remiss not to highlight his amazing band. Adam Lancaster on keyboard, Jay Ware on drums, and Jonah Horton on bass guitar all deliver outstanding performances. Watching these musicians collaborate was a joy. This event wasn’t just about Christmas music; it was a world-class jazz quartet experience with Billingsley switching from vocal performances to the saxophone.

This jazzed-up Christmas music has deeply resonated with both fans and critics. Joyful! The best way I can describe the sound is as if an exceptionally talented singer with an impressive range made a Christmas album collaborating with the Ramsey Lewis Trio. To echo the sentiments of numerous positive reviews, Charles Billingsley’s album has been praised for its exquisite execution and for his ability to deftly swing with the band harkening back to the legendary styles of iconic singers such as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.

Charles Billingsley’s vocal prowess are marked by an extraordinary range, seamlessly transitioning from deep, resonant lows to Impressive highs within a single composition. This remarkable range, not only showcases his innate talent, it also reflects his disciplined approach to vocal training, emphasizing breath control, crisp diction, and emotional depth.

More than technical proficiency, his ability to forge an emotional connection with his audience sets him apart. His performances transcend mere singing, becoming an earnest expression of his profound passion for music and faith.

The intimate acoustics and cozy 535-seat venue amplified the enchantment of the evening. Also adding to the concert’s charm, a unique chance to not only buy tickets to the music performance but also purchase tickets to partake in a special Christmas Dinner with Charles Billingsley and his band before the show. This, for those that chose this option, transformed a Christmas concert into an immersive holiday experience with a family style dinner featuring a festive spread complete with candied yams, herb-roasted potatoes, green beans, juicy chicken breast and pork tenderloin wrapped around stuffing, topped with gravy.

While the culinary offerings were delicious, Charles Billingsley, Adam Lancaster, Jay Ware, Jonah Horton, Bruce Allen, Jason Burke, and Susan Tedrow were the main course, captivating the audience and creating a magical evening.

A Tasty Night of Music and More at the Lexington Moose Lodge

I visited the Lexington Moose Lodge on Friday, January 12, for an evening filled with delicious food and fantastic music. The night featured two members of The Pick-Up Band, Kenton and Gloria, who put on a great show. Along with performing as a duo, Kenton also plays guitar in the band The Party Crashers. Before diving into the entertainment details, first a word about the food and venue. The Moose Lodge in a nutshell: good people, good music, and good food with prices from 25 years ago! Some of my personal favorites include the $7 pizza, $5 wings, $5 chef salad, $6 club sandwich, and the signature $7 Moose burger. The lodge has a unique perk for members – you can store your own bottle of liquor behind the bar. For just $1, the Moose provides ice and soda or juice, or you can opt for a $2 draft beer. They’re also quite accommodating with meal requests; for example, they happily combined $1.75 grilled vegetables with a $6 cheese steak (no bun) to create a tasty low-carb option on their flat-top grill.

Joining the Moose organization for just $45 yearly grants you and your spouse membership among over a million individuals across 1500 communities in all 50 states. This organization contributes an impressive $75-100 million annually to these communities through a blend of monetary support and volunteer efforts. Whether you’re contributing your time, making a monetary donation, or simply enjoying a meal, music, and dancing at a Moose lodge, you can take pride in knowing that your participation benefits local communities. Each Moose lodge, while unique, consistently offers a warm blend of friendly people, enjoyable music, and delicious food, creating an experience that invites repeated visits. For those who enjoy bingo, karaoke, or Vegas-style slot machines with better-than-Vegas payouts, the Moose organization has even more to offer. Additionally, many lodges, including the Lexington Moose, feature amenities like a pool table and a play area for children, ensuring entertainment for all ages.

The Lexington Moose Lodge is closed on Sundays and Mondays, but fortunately we have the luxury of two Moose Lodges within just a 20-minute drive of each other! On the days when Lexington Moose is closed, you can visit the Blue Ridge Moose Lodge in Fairfield, VA open Thursday through Monday which means in Rockbridge County, there’s access to a Moose Lodge seven days a week!

Well, on to the show: Kenton sings with a distinctive Southern accent, perfect for Southern rock and country. He sang great renditions of Copperhead Road, 5 O’Clock Somewhere, and Bad Moon Rising, with Gloria providing backup vocals. I particularly enjoyed Tom Petty’s Last Dance with Mary Jane, where Gloria backed up Kenton with the harmonica. In addition to the harmonica, Gloria also complements Kenton’s singing and guitar with the tambourine, rhythm stick, cowbell, and more. Gloria also takes the lead on numerous songs. Her powerful voice brings a fresh perspective to classic hits typically associated with male lead singers, and she delivers electrifying renditions of songs by The Animals, Marvin Gaye, Doobie Brothers, and much more. While Gloria’s vocal talent is undeniable, Kenton’s prowess on the guitar adds another layer to their performance. His solos showcase his impressive guitar skills. What’s particularly captivating about listening to talented bands cover classic songs is the slightly different twist they bring to familiar tunes and hearing your favorites in a way for the first time. Kenton excels in this aspect, effortlessly weaving in new harmonies and unique riffs as he improvises, making each guitar segment as distinctive and personal as the vocals.

Kenton and Gloria not only alternate between lead and backup roles but also equally share singing responsibilities on many songs. I particularly enjoyed their versions of Good Lovin’, Satisfy Me, and Walking on Sunshine highlighting their ability to harmonize and create a dynamic musical partnership. Speaking of partnership, you could literally feel the love in the air, extending beyond just the fellowship among Moose members. Kenton and Gloria, who are married, radiated their love for each other, their music, and their dedication to bringing joy to those in attendance. This genuine affection infused an already fantastic night of music with an additional layer of warmth and joy.

Kenton and Gloria showcased two original songs, If I Could and The Call. I enjoyed both and recommend requesting some  original music if you get a chance to see Kenton and Gloria or The Pickup Band. Speaking of requests I asked if they knew I’ve got a name by Jim Croce. Although unfamiliar with the song, they were eager to learn it. I replied no need you are playing a great mix and I am really enjoying it. But they insisted, expressing their admiration for Jim Croce and a commitment to learning the song. These two care about the music and they care about their fans!

For more information, you can visit The Pickup Band’s Facebook page. Catch Kenton, Gloria, and the rest of the band live at Brew Ridge Taps on February 10th and The Lexington Moose Lodge on February 17th. Additionally, they will be performing at The Staunton Moose Lodge just a short drive outside Rockbridge County on February 24th.

About The Pickup Band:

With a mix of high-energy rock and country, the Pickup Band is guaranteed to add an extra level of excitement to any event. From the first song to the last, the audience will be clapping, dancing and, best of all, singing along! The 5-piece group is made up of experienced musicians from all over. Phil Holstein on lead and rhythm guitar and vocals and Rocky Smith on bass guitar and vocals are Rockbridge natives. John Good on all things percussion has called the county home since 1993. Leading the pack are Kenton Koty on guitars, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and vocals and the one and only Gloria Lewane doing most of the vocal work. She has also been known to pick up the guitar and shake a mean tambourine. Husband and wife team Gloria and Kenton have played in groups up and down the east coast and have lived in the area for 5+ years. The band covers a wide spectrum of musical styles. From the classic rock of Creedence, the Stones and Grand Funk Railroad to the latest country hits by Lainey Wilson, Little Big Town and Ashley McBride, the band does it all and takes pride in approaching each performance with the commitment to providing the best show.

Blue Ridge Mountain Views and the Sounds of “Hoss” – Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery, Featuring the Music of Jason Hostetter

Jason Hostetter and Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery have been a staple of Rockbridge County for many years. If you appreciate well crafted wine, beer and music you probably already are aware of these Rockbridge County favorites, but if you haven’t discovered them yet, you definitely will want to check them out!

Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery, located at 60 Great Valley Lane in Natural Bridge, Virginia, is a well known and celebrated establishment by both locals and visitors.

They blend a traditional vineyard with the innovation of a craft brewery. Renowned for its artisanal Belgian farmhouse-style beers and a selection of wines from their 6-acre vineyard, the venue offers a unique tasting experience in an incredibly picturesque setting, showcasing amazing mountain vista views.

Enhancing the atmosphere this afternoon was the musical talent of Jason Hostetter, a gifted guitarist and vocalist. He is known for his diverse performances, which include a wide variety of genres, spanning from the 50s to the present. Jason’s deep voice is particularly well-suited for songs by artists like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. But he maintains his own style with his unique voice, as well as being a skilled guitarist, improvising and adding a little something extra to already great tunes. He has been a featured performer at local events such as “Cheers with the Chamber,” “Balloons Over Rockbridge,” and “Rockin’ the Gorge”, and maintains an active schedule of bookings in and around Rockbridge County and up and down the east coast.

Back to our venue: Along with great beer and wine, Great Valley provides a variety of snacks, including chips, charcuterie, and cheese. Additionally, the venue often hosts food trucks, especially during live music events, to offer a variety of food to complement the tastings.

Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery is more than just a destination for wine and beer connoisseurs; it’s a vibrant cultural venue. It combines the enjoyment of locally-produced beverages with the scenic splendor of the Shenandoah Valley and the rich musical experiences provided by talented artists like Jason Hostetter. This combination of fine drinks, stunning views, and quality entertainment makes it a must-visit spot in Rockbridge County!

Speaking of Jason Hostetter, aka “Hoss”, his shows are known for their wide-ranging musical selection and engaging delivery. He plays at least a little bit of everything, but despite his young age, he will tell you the 60s and 70s are his favorite decades.

Whether you are already a fan or want a great introduction to some amazing music of the past, you do not want to miss a chance to see “Hoss” perform. I love to hear him sing Johnny, Waylon, Willie, Glen, Coe, Prine, and so many more classic artists. He sings “The Highwayman” and changes his voice for all 4 singers!  Hearing “Hoss” sing with his own distinctive voice, and also channel amazing performers of the past, makes for an unforgettable show.

As far as more modern music, it is tough to pick favorites from so many great artists in his repertoire. I particularly enjoy his renditions of Chris Stapleton, Darius Rucker, Steve Earle, Sturgil Simpson, Tyler Childress, Colby Acuff,  Blake Shelton, Toby Keith, Jamey Johnson, and so many more.

He can rock out “Operator” by Jim Croce, play a medley, switching from The Marshall Tucker Band, to Led Zeppelin, play instrumental Pink Floyd, giving his voice a short respite, and then deliver great renditions of The Eagles, CCR, or Robert Earl Keen. After seeing over a dozen shows it truly seems the list goes on forever and the party never ends!

Jason Hostetter puts on an amazing show by himself, but I would be remiss not to mention, he sometimes performs with other amazing musicians, most notably as “Hoss and the Soss” and “Hoss and the Boss.” Jeff Mason, aka “Soss”, was somewhat of a mentor to “Hoss” and is one heck of a singer, bass guitar player, drummer, and overall multi-instrumentalist! Jeff was also a long time member of big time local favorite group, The Red Hill Band. Stacey Stevens, aka the “Boss”, may wear a suit and tie 9-5, but is happiest with a guitar in his hands, and boy does he know how to use it! He literally has a degree in “shredding.” Stacey does double duty for several bands, both singing and shredding the guitar, with Little Marvin and the Martians and Southpaw. Jeff Mason also plays bass for Little Marvin and the Martians. As you may have noticed Jason Hostetter has long been a part of an amazing group of local musicians that jam together, support and root for each other. We are truly lucky to have this Nashville level talent in Rockbridge, VA!

Multiple times I have been lucky enough to experience the combination of Great Valley and the super talented Jason Hostetter. Every time “Hoss” plays I hear tons of my favorite songs, and yet every time, I hear something I have never heard him play before. I can not recommend this Rockbridge combo enough!  If you know of a place on earth enjoying a better view, better people, better wine/beer/music combo, please let me know so I can check it out! You can see Hoss at Great Valley Brewery and Winery on June 21, May 12, July 21, August 30 and September 22.

Smiley’s Sports Bar, Featuring Jason Burke and Bobbi Folk and More… Incredible Live Music at Land and Sea! The “Wild Card” Article!

Located on the Northern edge of Rockbridge County, Smiley’s Sports Bar serves as a shining example of the community’s passion for live music and robust American cuisine. It was Wednesday evening, February 7, I had the pleasure of experiencing for the first time an eclectic and mesmerizing performance by the duo known as Wild Card, featuring Jason Burke and Bobbi Folk.

I was anticipating a night of fantastic music, and not only did I experience that from the get-go, but also a great song new to me: “Barton Hollow.”  Live music performances offer so much: they can introduce new music, bring new dimensions to favorite songs and most of all they have the power to transform and elevate music in ways recordings simply cannot. Big thanks to Wild Card for introducing me to a new song and artist, and for their kick ass performance of “Barton Hollow” by The Civil Wars!

Another thing that struck me early on about Wild Card’s performance was their infectious enthusiasm for the music they were sharing.  Covering a wide array of artists, from Dolly Parton to Chris Cornell, each song was a journey through genres and emotions. Bobbi’s powerful rendition of “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” paid homage to Dolly Parton’s genius, showcasing her ability to capture the essence of the songs while making them distinctly her own. Her versatility shone brightly as she led one of my favorite ever versions of “Killing Me Softly,” that channeled the soul of Aretha Franklin and the intensity of Audioslave with ease.

Jason seamlessly complemented Bobbi’s lead with his harmonies, his pedals looping and layering, not to mention awesome guitar solos. This was especially evident in their rendition of Audioslave’s 2003 hit “Like a Stone,”  where he took the reins of an entire band, while Bobbi took the equally hard task and nailed the song, giving homage to legend Chris Cornell.

Jason took the lead on many songs including two of my favorites: capturing the classic rock energy of Chuck Berry in “Johnny B. Goode” as well as the intricate guitar and vocals of “Aeroplane” by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Their choice of name, Wild Card, couldn’t be more appropriate, as their setlist kept everyone guessing and thoroughly entertained, not knowing what is coming next, from the classic highs of Fleetwood Mac, to the smooth grooves of “No Diggity” where not one, but both performers rapped and sang to Dr. Dre. I enjoyed every song!

Another noteworthy aspect of Wild Card’s performance was the presence of not just one, but two lead singers! Bobbi and Jason harmonized and seamlessly shared the spotlight throughout many songs.Their collaborative spirit breathed new life into songs like “Gold on the Ceiling” by The Black Keys, “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, “Listen to the Music” by The Doobie Brothers, and “Sweet Dreams” by the Eurythmics, showcasing the joy and unity of music while covering many genres.
The guitar and song weren’t the only elements that captured my attention. The culinary offerings at Smiley’s provided a symphony of flavors that complemented the evening. Opting for a healthier choice, I enjoyed a salad topped with delicious brisket and a Diet Coke for only $11. In the past my gastronomic adventures at Smiley’s have spanned the spectrum from selections  from their full bar, to a variety of dishes that sing the praises of southern comfort food. My favorites: fried chicken, pulled pork quesadillas, deviled eggs, jalapeño poppers, and, of course, French fries. Other sides, too, like cheesy broccoli or macaroni and cheese, add a delightful richness to complement a main course. Amidst this array of tempting options, the brisket salad stands out as a beacon for those seeking something on the lighter side, yet still irresistibly tasty!

The ambiance of Smiley’s Sports Bar, enhanced by the friendly service that is as much a staple as the food and music, invites locals and visitors alike into a warm embrace. It’s a place where every night feels like a gathering of friends, whether you’re there for the “best BBQ in Virginia” or to enjoy the raw, captivating energy of Wild Card.
I knew I was headed for a night of great music, having heard Jason Burke play many times before, as well as having the pleasure of hearing both Jason and Bobbi sing and play in the band, The Party Crashers. It was a privilege to attend a Party Crashers practice in early December, unfortunately, having missed their 2023 New Year’s Eve show at The Georges in downtown Lexington. It is a sure thing I will be attending and reporting on a Party Crashers show in 2024! They will be performing July 4 at the amazing Glen Maury Park main stage, or at “Friday’s Alive” at Davidson Park in Lexington, VA (date yet to be determined), or back again at the Georges for New Year’s Eve in the stunning Patton Room.

In addition to Bobbi Folk – lead vocals and Jason Burke – lead vocals/ guitar, Party Crashers is composed of Bruce Allen – lead vocals and keyboard, Kenton Hoseapple – lead guitar, Wayne Humphrey – bass guitar, and Andrew Duff – drums. This is a powerhouse band, trust me, you’ll want to join me and experience them for yourself!
Tonight marked the first time Rock River Experiences covered a live artist and also took iphone videos for social media. It is a challenge to get quality photography and videography in a dark and often oddly lit bar with lots of background noise. Please bear with me, and follow and like my freshman attempts at social media video on Instagram and Facebook. We welcome guest blogs, pictures, videos about live music and also about local businesses, nature, or anything positive in and around our county!

Rockbridge County, VA is truly magical. Consider the friendly nature of its people, our rocks, creeks, rivers, waterfalls and mountain vistas that rival similar beauty in Hawaii and Costa Rica and our live music that rivals Nashville, TN and Austin, TX.  Some talented artists I love and look forward to experiencing again in 2024 include:  Bruce Allen and Jason Burke, Keith Bryant, Dennis Thorne, Jason Hostetter, Glen Shelton, Lil Marvin and the Martians, South Paw, David Wayne, Mojo Parker, Who Shot John, North by Burke, Hoss and the Soss, Hoss and the Boss, Gloria and Kenton, The Pick up Band, Wild Card, So Diverse, Spencer Hatcher Band, Will Reid, Steve Minter and I am sure there are many more I haven’t heard yet. Please check: https://www.livemusiclexington.com/ for who is playing this week in Rockbridge County or book one of these amazing bands for your next birthday, wedding or special event.

Speaking of great music and beautiful tropical destinations…  Have you ever wanted to listen to the music of Rockbridge County and Southwest VA on a 5 day Bahamas cruise? Well, you are in luck! Sept 28-Oct 1 for less than $1500 per couple you can cruise the seas while listening to Bruce Allen, Jason Burke, Will Reid, Glen Shelton, and Jason Hostetter. Bruce Allen, who hosts Open Mic Night with Jason Burke at Smileys Sports Bar Thursdays 7-10 PM, is committed to “keeping music live” on land and sea! Covid put a temporary stop to Bruce’s yearly Live Music cruise, but they are back, and tickets are still available. Check comments for more info.
I’ll be back at Smiley’s tomorrow for Open Mic Night with Bruce and Jason, where anyone is welcome to sing or play an instrument alongside Bruce and Jason. They are routinely joined by many other talented friends such as Susan and Mark Tedro, Wayne Humphrey, Brian Dearing, Stan Coffey and Tim Knick. Speaking of Tim Knick and tonight’s Wild Card performance, an added surprise was Tim, while celebrating his birthday at Smiley‘s, took centerstage as Wild Card’s drummer for several songs on and off throughout the night. Please like and follow Rock River Experience’s Instagram and Facebook account and check Reels and TikTok for footage of music from tonight and a happy birthday song and dance for Tim and his wife.

As I left Smiley’s tonight, the echoes of many songs, and definitely “Barton Hollow”, as performed by Jason Burke and Bobbi Folk, lingered in my mind, a melodious reminder of the discoveries and pleasures that await with live music. Smiley’s isn’t just a sports bar; it’s a cornerstone of the Rockbridge community, a place where memories are made, and the simple joys of life—live music, food, and fellowship—are celebrated 4 nights a week: Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat even in the winter months! #Lucky #RockbrideMusicRocks!

“Rockin’ the Gorge” with Little Marvin and the Martians

“Rockin’ the Gorge” has established itself as more than a music festival, but also a vibrant expression of Rockbridge county and of Glasgow’s communal and artistic spirit. A diverse array of local talents are featured, alongside a variety of craft vendors and food options. The first concert, on June 21, 2021, showcased Jason Hostetter and Friends. More than just a musical spectacle, the event also offers various community-oriented services.  Proceeds from sales of event-themed merchandise, including T-shirts, were allocated to support future music events, demonstrating a strong commitment to the growth and sustainability of the local music scene.

Little Marvin and the Martians: A Band of Exceptional Talent
Little Marvin & The Martians, a versatile music group, showcase a diverse repertoire. Their music spans various genres including 80’s Rock, Classic Rock, Pop, and New Country. The band, composed of Stacy Stevens (Guitar/Vocals/Manager), Kimberly Northrup (Vocals), Jeff Mason (Bass/Vocals), and Jeff Sinnett (Drums), give an energetic performance appealing to a wide audience. With their ability to play a little bit of everything, they ensures there is something for every musical taste. I had the good fortune to catch their show at “Rockin’ the Gorge” June 3rd, 2023 and really enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed being introduced to a fun song with a catchy beat: “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” by Little Big Town. Live music often offers the chance to hear old favorites, with the feel and vibrations only experienced in person, while also being introduced to new favorites at the same time! The Martians rocked out every song covered, new and old! Along with hearing a song I had never heard before, I also particularly enjoyed their Guns N’ Roses Medley and hearing Kimberly’s vocal versions of “Heart of Glass” and “Ex’s and Oh’s.”

More Details on the Band:

  • Stacy Stevens: Sings and strums. Remarkably, Stevens not only possesses a figurative mastery in guitar shredding but also holds a literal master’s degree in the field. His exceptional guitar skills, academically honed and creatively executed, add an electrifying edge to the band’s performances.
  • Kimberly Northrup: Her versatile vocal prowess shines across various genres, from the energetic realms of 80’s Rock to the nuanced domains of Classic Rock, Pop, and New Country.
  • Jeff Mason: As the bassist/vocalist, Mason brings a depth to both the rhythm section and the vocal harmonies, enriching the band’s sound with his dual contributions.
  • Jeff Sinnett: Manning the drums, Sinnett provides the essential backbone to the band’s eclectic musical style, ensuring each performance is rhythmically engaging and dynamically varied.

This lineup brings together a rich blend of talent and experience, contributing to the energetic and captivating performances that Little Marvin & The Martians are known for. They encourage the audience to get out of their seats and dance, creating a lively and memorable atmosphere.
Their songs are not just fun and lively party music, but also intentionally chosen to showcase Stacey’s prowess on the six string guitar, Kimberly’s wide range as a singer and Jeff Mason and Jeff Sinnett’s experience and skill on the bass guitar and drums. I highly recommend experiencing the unique blend and wide range of music Little Marvin & The Martians bring to the stage!

The Martians will be competing at The Foundry (Basic City Beer Co) in Waynesboro, VA in a friendly battle of the bands with 3 other great local bands June 8th and will be back on the Rockin’ the Gorge stage again July 20th. Stacey Stevens will be playing with Southpaw at Quaker Steak and Lube in Raphine, VA Saturday, June 15th, and Stacey will also be appearing solo on Aug 24th at a Community Festival in Bedford, Va. So many chances to catch great music!
Did I mention Little Marvin and the Martians won the 2023 Battle of the Bands at Foundry in 2023! Sometimes I am asked if I exaggerate about our live music scene in and around Rockbridge County? The answer is No! The music really is just as amazing as it sounds 🙂 Come check out all the amazing music for yourself.
